Phase quality data based on Lincoln University ryegrass growth research and Beef+Lamb NZ Q-Graze methodology. Phase 1 (vegetative, <2600 kgDM/ha) represents high-quality leafy pasture. Phase 2 (reproductive, 2600–3500 kgDM/ha) includes stem elongation and reduced digestibility. Phase 3 (rank, >3500 kgDM/ha) has significant dead matter and lowest feed quality. In spring/summer, pasture covers above 2600 kgDM/ha trigger reproductive phase transition, reducing effective ME. In autumn/winter, pasture remains largely vegetative regardless of cover.
